In March, the tennis star was banned from playing, due to a failed drug test at the Australian Open. The tennis star was found guilty of taking Meldonium and was initially thought to have been banned for four years or more. She has been looking forward to the International Tennis Federation‘s decision ever since.

But as Maria revealed that she didn’t know about the drug being mentioned in the list from the World Anti-Doping Agency, and the members of the board agreed that Maria didn’t take the drug on purpose, so her ban might be reduced to 2 years.

If a ban of 2 years is to be ruled, Maria will not be allowed to play tennis until January 26, 2018. Maria has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport that the punishment is ” unfairly harsh.” A CAS statement was published that read: “In her appeal to the CAS, Ms Sharapova seeks the annulment of the Tribunal’s decision to sanction her with a two-year period of ineligibility further to an anti-doping rule violation.”

It continued: “Ms Sharapova submits that the period of ineligibility should be eliminated, or in the alternative, reduced.”

If Maria’s suspension from the game stays in place, then she would not be playing any Olympic games this year. She will also miss out 7 major tournaments of tennis. When the news about her failed drug test appeared, all the brands that sponsored her previously, ended their contracts with the player.
