A 14-year-old suicide bomber blew himself up at a wedding ceremony in Gaziantep, Turkey. The boy was said to be linked to the Islamic State.
The bomb attack killed almost 51 people and around 69 were injured. Many injured people are in serious condition, reports.
The boy detonated his bomb at the end of the ceremony when everyone was dancing merrily. The president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, condemned the attack in his country and said that IS was responsible for it. The Kurdish wedding ceremony was left with sobbing families after the attack.
According to experts, it is believed that it was a well thought plan because the main purpose was to kill as many people as possible.
Though IS has not released any statement that the boy was planted by them in the ceremony, but it is thought that as the militants were forced by Kurdish army to leave Manbij recently, they planned to take a revenge in this manner. The attack was also conducted following Turkish government’s announcement of active involvement in the Syrian conflict.
As the rebels supported by Turkish forces are planning to attack Jarablus, the province held by IS, it seems this was a warning from them to stay away. A written statement by the president of Turkey was released which revealed that the country did not find any difference between the IS fighters, PKK militants, and people supporting Fethullah Gulen.
The statement read: “Our country and our nation have again only one message to those who attack us – you will not succeed!” The MP Mahmut Togrul reported that it was a Kurdish marriage ceremony and was held for one of the members of HDP (the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ democratic party).
It was reported by Veli Can that, “The celebrations were coming to an end and there was a big explosion among people dancing. There was blood and body parts everywhere.” A spokesperson from US National security council, Ned Price said:“We stand with the people of Turkey as they defend their democracy in the face of all forms or terrorism.”
